What Is a Slot?

A slot is a dynamic placeholder that either waits for content (a passive slot) or calls out for it using an Add Items to Slot action (an active slot). Each identified slot is mapped to a specific slot type. Slot types help bots understand the kind of information that is available in a slot and how to process it. They can be created by selecting the Add Slot Type option in the left pane of the slot settings page. You can also use a regular expression to define a custom slot type. For example, you might want to have your travel bot look for flight codes. To do so, you would map the slot type to a regex pattern such as [A-Z]+d3,4$, which will match any utterance that contains flight numbers.

In a casino game, a slot machine is a spinning reel machine that has several paylines. Players insert cash or, in “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, paper tickets with a barcode into the slot to activate the reels and earn credits based on the combinations of symbols that appear. Typically, a game’s theme is reflected in its symbols and bonus features.
