What Is Entertaiment?

Entertaiment is a broad term that covers any type of entertainment, including art, music, dance, theater, film, and video games. The word entertainment comes from the Medieval Latin intertenere, which means “to hold inside.” Its Indo-European root is ten, meaning to stretch or expand.

Today, the word is almost exclusively associated with amusement and pleasure, but in its earliest forms, it could refer to any experience or activity that caused someone to feel happy or laugh. As entertainment has evolved, it has become capable of being adapted for any scale: from the private amusements of an individual choosing from an enormous selection of pre-recorded products; to the social engagements of a banquet or party; and to performances intended for thousands.
