Entertaiment means to entertain. It is a form of amusement, but can also include ceremonial activities or religious festivals or satire. It can be on a small scale, such as an individual who chooses to play a game or watch a movie as entertainment; a banquet adapted for entertainment; or performances for thousands or even for the entire world. The word comes from the medieval Latin intertenere, formed by the prefix inter meaning “inside” and tenere, from the Indo-European root ten.
Entertainment is a powerful force that can bring joy and stimulate learning, but it can have negative impacts if not regulated properly. Entertainment hits on points that our brains were evolved to deeply respond to, like backstabbing, murders and other themes in the social world.
